Vectis Rugby, the Isle of Wight based club, won both the tag and full contact competitions at their inaugural girls rugby festival at the end of the season.
Having gained quite a reputation for the success of their tag rugby side in recent years, the ‘Wight Sharks’ have responded to the girls’ commitment by introducing their first full contact team in September last year.
On the day the Vectis girls faced Guildfordians, Petersfield, Portsmouth, Harlequins and Brighton Hill school (Basingstoke) and after an initial 15-15 draw with Petersfield made it through to the final where they played Harlequins. The sides were all square 5-5 at the break, with Vectis scoring the decider in the second-half, owing much to a visitors’ try being disallowed when the referee was unsighted.
In the tag competition the Wight Sharks were up against their own second string, the Wight Crusaders, Ryde School (IW), Dorking RFC, Malvern Angels, Testbourne School, Havant and a mixed Barbarians side, and extended their unbeaten run.
