At The Touch Of A Button

Last season saw an exciting new development for English club and country rugby. England Rugby formed a four-year partnership with Sportev to provide exclusive video highlights of every Zurich Premiership match, the Powergen Cup and England’s Investec Challenge internationals to broadband internet subscribers all over the world.

The service was trialled with the 2001 Investec matches and was tested further with the second half of the Zurich Premiership season. During this period, an audience of over 12,000 rugby fans accessed the channel.

This month (September) sees the launch of the first full season of RFU.tv. Subscribers will be able to watch their choice of highlights of any of the season’s key talking points, whenever they like. All they need to enjoy this new service is a broadband internet connection that can be supplied by British Telecom, NTL, Telewest, Freeserve, or AOL.

RFU.tv enables subscribers to view the most recent matches, or delve into club or country specific archives. Last season’s subscribers’ most popular buttons accessed highlights of the Martin Johnson punch and Ben Cohen’s try against Ireland. Viewers were able to re-examine these key moments from numerous  angles - and they did, over and over again.

RFU.tv went live for the 2002/03 season on September 1st. A season ticket can be purchased direct from www.rfu.tv, or you can choose to subscribe for a single month.

England Rugby is the first rugby union organisation to develop its broadband initiative and its success has encouraged other Unions to undertake similar programmes.
