More Women Coaches

Durham University’s Maiden Castle Sports Ground was the venue for a recent Level I Coaching Course for women working or studying in the North East. The course took place in the period between exams and holidays, an ideal time for 16 of the candidates who were at the University. All 19 candidates passed the course and 14 remain in the region this season.

Course tutor/assessor, Andy Dixon, who is also Coach to Durham University’s Women’s Team said, “Many women only start playing rugby when they get to university so it is sometimes quite difficult for them to fully develop their skills in the few years they are there. I know that doing a coaching course helped with my own game and hopefully they will find the same. I am happy that I have been involved with raising the profile of women’s rugby and helping to get more female coaches into the game and hope to run similar Level I courses every year and maybe an occasional Level II course. Durham is currently a hive of activity for women’s rugby and I am delighted to be part of it.”
