Penguins Pick Up Plaudits

The Penguins blitzed their way to a 50-17 triumph over British Students at Oxford University’s Iffley Road recently. The superior visiting side, made up of several Pacific Islanders, started fiercely, with the Penguins racking up 26-0 in the first half courtesy of three tries.

The students came back into the game after the break thanks to tries from Karelle Dixon of Oxford University and Will Green from Oxford Brookes. Mat Honeyben also kicked two conversions and one penalty. But their efforts were not enough with the Penguins scoring a massive eight tries by the final whistle. Will Ruibe was their star man, crashing over the try-line three times, with Dave McCallum, John Allen, Eddie McLaughlin, Paul Newton and Howard Graham also scoring. Graham also kicked five successful conversions.

The game was being held in honour of the Rugby Football Union’s President Derek Morgan, who has contributed hugely to the development of the student game. On his way to pulling on the England shirt, Morgan played for several student teams and after his playing days were over went on to become coach of English and British Universities. He was also chairman of the UAU/BUSA student league for 24 years and honorary treasurer of English Students for 17 years.
