Services Rugby

Senior Service

The Royal Navy continued its policy of promoting rugby development throughout the world recently when it deployed RDO Mal Chumbley and Referee Trainer Paul Burton to the NATO base in Naples, Italy.

Level 1 Coaching and Referee Foundation Courses were arranged at the request of Lieutenant Andy McKay of the NATO Lions, the club for all service personnel in the region. The courses were attended by members of all three services working in Italy as well as Ferenc Tana’rki, a Hungarian international currently serving with the Hungarian Army in Naples, who added to the international flavour of the weekend.

Both courses were hugely successful and plans are already underway to repeat the programme as well as offering workshops to develop the existing referee and coaching base. Rugby is gaining in popularity in the region and the RNRU are keen to ensure everything is done to maintain the momentum. HM Ships regularly visit the port of Naples and by establishing a core of officials and coaches these visiting ships can continue to play competitive fixtures whilst away from the UK.
