Top England tourists celebrate biggest Bok defeat

It was fitting that the first ever England squad to tour to South Africa in 1972 and who beat the Springboks at Ellis Park by 18-9, having led 9-6 at half time, should be at Twickenham last month to witness the biggest ever defeat of South Africa in a test match.

Manager Alec Lewis was there still keeping them in line and said, “I think this present team is one of the best England sides I have ever seen. No South Africa side is ever really a weak one and to win by that margin was magnificent.

“The lads all thoroughly enjoyed being together again thanks to Derek Morgan, the RFU President. It was fantastic as, coming from all parts of the country, some hadn’t seen each other for ten years. Their tour win remains the best an England side has done on tour to South Africa, it was only equalled by the Lions of 1974. It was a remarkable achievment, particularly as we went out there dubbed by the press ‘the no hopers’.

“Almost the entire party was there and Twickenham was amazing, the buzz was extraordinary. We were all admiration for today’s players. It is going to take a very good side on top form to beat them.”
