Army women win title

By Capt Eddie Hutton, ARU(W) Secretary

Despite heavy operational commitments, all three services fielded teams for the first Women’s Inter-Services Rugby Competition. The Army, captained by Maj Liz Mckinney-Bennett, played their first game against the RAF, who were fresh from their 24-10 win against the Navy. Coach Sgt Gareth Ivory capitalized on the strengths of established players like England hooker Anne O’Flynn and emerging players to get off to a 37-10 start.

The newly formed Navy team made the Army work hard to score their only try in the first half, but after the break, notable tries were added by LCpl Joy Brown, back from injury, and talented newcomer Pte Sarah Wilkinson. Superior fitness and experience saw the Army to a 35-5 win and the Inter-Services title.
