Roy Evans (12/2/26-19/5/02) was a record breaker. He was born in Tylorstown, South Wales with a crippled foot and had his right leg in irons until the age of seven. However, despite this difficult start, between 1950 and 1989 he played over 1,000 first class games for Osterley RFC. This is a world record, and was acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Records in their 1994 edition.
As if 1,007 matches for Osterley RFC were not enough, Roy also represented the following six clubs in a further 150 games: Banbury, Cheltenham, West Country Wanderers, Osterley ‘Wets’, London Pomes and Tylorstown Tigers.
He was still playing the game he loved well into his 60s. As a tribute to Roy, the Museum of Rugby is displaying a selection his personal effects and items which symbolise his extraordinary dedication and achievements in rugby. The exhibition runs until the end of October 2003.
