Colston's hat trick

For the third year running, Colston’s of Bristol were victors in the De La Salle Cup final at the 17th National Schools Rugby Festival.

With 16 of the top teams in the UK playing, it was never going to be an easy run but Colston’s had wins against Blackrock 24-0, RGS High Wycombe 28-0 and an extremely hard fought win against Millfield from Somerset 8-3. The opposition in the final was Ivybridge from Devon representing the continuing strength in state school rugby. Ivybridge got to the final with wins over Bradford Grammar 19-3, Wellington College 22-7, and St Peters, Gloucester, 35-5.

In the final it was extremely close with Colston’s leading by a single penalty goal up until the last few minutes, when two tries put Colston’s a comfortable distance ahead. Ivybridge managed to score a penalty goal to close the gap but could not get nearer as Colston ran out winners 15-3.

Host side St Joseph’s College secured a plate final position with two comfortable wins against Outwood Grange 31-3, Campion 7-3 and a draw against last year’s plate winners Brighton College. In the final St Joseph’s were matched against Glantaf from Cardiff who had beaten Merchiston from Edinburgh 12-5, Monmouth from Wales 12-0 and drawn with QEGS Wakefield. Both sets of fans were kept on the edge of their seats as St Joseph’s took an early lead with a James Holmes’ penalty, before Glantaf replied with a try. The game continued to be very even with the home side having a chance to take the lead just before half time but Holmes missed a relatively easy penalty kick in front of the posts. In the second half Holmes had a second opportunity to put St Joseph’s into the lead but again missed and it was no surprise when Glantaf scored a late second try to run out worthy 10-3 winners.

Player of the tournament, renamed The ‘Nick Duncombe Memorial Trophy’- presented by Mr and Mrs Duncombe, parents of the late Nick Duncombe - was Ollie Morgan from Millfield School, Somerset. Try of the tournament was scored by Zack Hembry of host school St Joseph’s College in their game against Wellington College, Berkshire.
