Office Angels Navy Sevens

The annual Royal Navy Rugby Union Sevens Tournament at HMS Collingwood, under the sponsorship of Office Angels, attracted 23 men’s and 10 ladies’ teams.

The ladies’ tag tournament was keenly contested, with the semi finals seeing Collingwood overcome Blockhouse, and Nelson subdue Drake to set up an all Portsmouth final. Despite a strong start from the Nelson girls, Collingwood rallied well and a closely contested match saw Nelson just hang on to edge the honours by two tries to one.

Three round robin leagues, totalling 55 games for the men, provided plenty of excitement for the large crowd. With Raleigh, Collingwood, HMS Invincible and the Commando Logistics Regiment setting the standard and posting some high scores, Heron were somewhat out of sorts and only managed a third place behind Nelson and 45 Commando in League C. The guys then embarked on three knockout competitions for the Cup, Plate and Wooden Spoon, with the Fleet Final for the top two ships teams in the leagues.

The Fleet Final saw a close encounter end with HMS Invincible overcoming some stout resistance from HMS Chatham to scrape home by 19-15. In the Wooden Spoon, HMS St Albans, led by Navy prop Simon “we only came for a bit of fun” Burns, recorded a resounding 21-0 victory over RN PT School HMS Temeraire, each having overcome the Raleigh and Collingwood ‘B’ sides in their respective semi finals.

The Plate competition saw Heron and HMS Sultan ‘A’ overcome the Ancient Mariners (RN Veterans) and Sultan ‘B’ in their respective semi finals. Heron then managed to vanquish the valiant men of the Gosport engineering school and claim the Plate.

In the Cup, a strong set of quarter finals eventually saw Raleigh ‘A’ emerge to face Nelson, and Collingwood ‘A’ line up against the Commando Logs Regiment in the semis. There were no real surprises when the teams who had finished first and second in League A - Raleigh and Collingwood - emerged to fight out the last encounter. As soon as the whistle blew, the Fijian select VII were on the attack, only to fumble the ball into Collingwood hands - an error that saw the hosts post the first 7 points with a touchdown under the posts. Before half time, however, Raleigh pace had twice breached the Collingwood defence and clocked up a 12-7 lead.

From the restart the intensity increased leading to a stern warning for an off the ball lunge by Raleigh as Collingwood pressed for a levelling score. A tackle left a Collingwood attacker sprawled with a damaged knee and, to allow the game to continue whilst an ambulance was called, proceedings moved to an adjacent pitch. The Raleigh side were temporarily reduced to six by the referee before the game restarted. With the clock ticking down Collingwood were able to notch a further score, but could not maximise their numerical advantage. Raleigh then finished strongly, ending the game victorious by a 24-12 margin.

Prizes were presented by RNRU Vice President Rear Admiral Tim McClement, with Office Angels Portsmouth Branch Manager Sally Haines. Player of the Tournament was awarded to Collingwood A’s WEA Smallbone. Commodore Philip Wilcocks and his staff made HMS Collingwood’s first class facilities available for the RNRU Sevens and the games were ably managed by the men and women of the RNRU Referees Society.
