Varsity Match

On Tuesday 9 December 2003 Oxford and Cambridge Universities will compete in the 122nd Varsity Match for the MMC Trophy, kicking off at 2pm. Since 1921 this prestigious event has taken place at Twickenham Stadium. This will be the third year that the MMC Trophy will have been played for with Cambridge winning last year’s fixture 15-13 and ending a three year losing streak.

Tickets are £27 or £18 for adults and £4 for schoolchildren. Buy 10 schoolchildren tickets and get one adult ticket free and the other supervising adults only have to pay £8 each. To book your tickets for this year’s match, visit www.ticketmaster.co.uk or call 0870 902 0000.

Players such as Rob Andrew, Gavin Hastings and Phil de Glanville first performed at Twickenham in the Varsity Match and in this year’s Rugby World Cup four players have played in the Varsity Match, Kevin Tkachuk from Canada, Simon Danielli from Scotland, David Humphreys from Ireland and Takuro Miuchi from Japan.

In 1976, the Bowring Group became the first sponsor of the Varsity Match. The company which was founded in 1811, merged with Marsh and McLennan Companies in 1980. Now 28 years later, in what is now the longest running sports sponsorship between rugby and industry, MMC continues to enjoy its association with the Varsity Match and the values it represents - tradition, commitment, passion and the pursuit of excellence.

This year there will again be three Marsh and McLennan Companies Schools Days taking place. Cambridge Schools Day is the first, followed by Oxford Schools Day and Harlequins Schools Day on the eve of the Varsity Match, Monday 1 December.
