Referees Review

By George, she’s blown it

By Dave Barton, Regional Media Manager

By day she’s a jet-setting finance manager for the company that makes Viagra, but on Saturday she’s keeping testosterone-fuelled men in check on the rugby field.

That’s Georgina Perrott - George as she likes to be known - a member of the London Society of Referees and one of the country’s most promising female officials. The 27-year-old started blowing the whistle four years ago when a hip injury after a mountain bike fall stopped her playing.

“I absolutely love it and I have had some cracking games this season,” said Perrott, a former open-side flanker for Camberley. “I referee at a higher level than I ever played and it gives me a huge buzz.”

Perrott works for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals - “not on Viagra” she insists - and shrugs off the comments she sometimes receives. “When I say to the players ‘can I check your studs?’ someone might say ‘I’ll be your stud’. It’s very light-hearted and once you earn your stripes they respect you,” she said.

After running the line in the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Barcelona last year, Perrott is hoping to be a woman in the middle at the next tournament in 2006, especially if England’s bid to be hosts is successful.
