Rugby clubs golf championship

Congratulations go to St Nicholas Old Boys RFC, winners of the national final of the 2003 Rugby Clubs Golf Championship, held at The Warwickshire Golf Club.

The team of four from the Herts & Middlesex League 3 rugby club took the title with a score of 97 points (made up of the best three individual scores, playing off handicap), beating the 95 points of Stourbridge RFC (National League 2) and Stow-on-the-Wold RFC (League SW 2 East), the former claiming second place on countback.

In addition to the Champion’s trophy, St Nicholas Old Boys won, from Ram Rugby, a full club strip of 18 Ramtex shirts, including the club’s logo, and from Wilson Sporting Goods, 12 dozen Wilson Staff True Velocity balls, again with the club’s logo. The four individuals will each enjoy a golf break in France, courtesy of Driveline Golf, and a year’s membership of the Telegraph Open Fairways scheme. Furthermore, they each took home a Wilson lightweight golf bag.

Wilson and Ram also provided a fine array of prizes for the second and third placed teams and the four top scoring individuals, the winner on countback, Duncan Brown of Barnes RFC, taking away a Wilson Deep Red driver. A player in one of the earlier heats, Geoff Pool of Barnet Saracens Elizabethans RFC, won the free draw that was open to all entrants, his prize a trip for two to the Hong Kong 7s, courtesy of Sport Abroad.

The national final also produced two hole-in-ones - on the same hole and by players from the same club! Mike Skinner and Dave Davies of Beckenham RFC (pictured above) achieved this unique golfing feat on the 8th hole of the East Course. Playing in separate four balls, the pair, who are also members of the same golf club, were unaware of each other’s achievement until the 19th.

The other competitors reaching the national final, from the 200+ original entries, were Bradford Salem RFC, Chester RFC, Civil Service RFC, Gillingham Anchorians RFC, Heathfield & Waldron RFC, Henley RFC, Maidenhead RFC, Nottingham RFC, Sale FC, Stourbridge Lions RFC and Worcester. At the post final dinner a cheque for £5,290 was presented by the event organisers to The Wooden Spoon Society.
