Rugby World Cup

Good News

The RFU Regional Media team and club and CB press officers were hard at work during England’s successful Rugby World Cup 2003 campaign.

At the start of the tournament, each member of the 30-strong squad sent their support to their adopted Constituent Body and their messages were released to the regional media to help promote community rugby in the counties. During the World Cup, players endorsed specific events taking place in England. Iain Balshaw supported the work of the Liverpool Collegiate and Eagle clubs in Lancashire; Ben Cohen backed Oundle’s fundraising activities in Northamptonshire, Ben Kay sent a message of support to Burton in Staffordshire, Lewis Moody praised player recruitment efforts in Berkshire and Mike Tindall complimented the coach development taking place at his old school in Yorkshire. In the week of the final Mike Catt took time out to support Somerset’s new Super 6 tournament for teenagers and Stuart Abbott put his weight behind several initiatives taking place in Oxfordshire.

During the tournament the regional press team produced 65 stories in 43 days distributed to the RFU’s media database of more than 500 newspapers, radio and TV stations and electronic media outlets.
