World Cup Fever

Rugby World Cup fever was rampant as England beat Australia in the Rugby World Cup final.

• There were an estimated 40,000 England supporters in the 83,000 Telstra Stadium crowd.
• The UK TV audience was around 10 million, the highest figure for breakfast time live sport on ITV.
• Rob Hayward, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association estimated that bars and rugby clubs around the UK sold around 37 million pints, with up to 15,000 pubs and rugby clubs opening early and many full well before kick off.
• Punters are said to have laid more than £5million on the final, making it the biggest betting game in rugby history.
• England women’s squads were on training weekends and watched the game in their various camps - the elite squad of 44 with England’s Australian coach Geoff Richards.
