Bristol Combination

The Bristol Combination Centenary Dinner at the city’s Thistle Hotel recently turned out to be quite a surprise for a number of worthy guests.  Before the evening’s speakers, Mike Rafter, David Perkins, Ed Morrison, Mike Morgan and RFU President Roy Manock could even get on their feet, MC for the night John Inverdale, himself a former Combination player with Old Colstonians, called Eric Blackman to the top table for some unpublicised presentations.

The RFU’s Development Committee Chairman and the driving force behind ‘The Blackman Report’, in keeping with its own objectives, proceeded to hand out Valuing the Volunteer awards to 13 unsuspecting recipients.  Amidst a standing ovation three club Presidents, Val Sidoli, Bristol Harlequins, Tom Mahoney, Bristol, and North Bristol’s Charlie Hill’s enormous contributions were recognised as were two long-serving referees Bert Angell and Colin Waters.

David Perkins picked up one for his work amongst the local schools as did Ken Coggins  with Aretians Harry Harrison, Horfields Frank Fare plus 2nd and 3rd XV Merit Table organisers Gerry Foley, Steve Arnold and Alan Stanton were all recognised for their support of rugby in and around the city.  Bristol Saracens Tony Sash was also included and the final award went to Dings Crusaders prop Brian Winter who is still going strong in the 3rd team at the age of 57 and has  passed the 1,000 appearance mark.

“It was a terrific evening,” said Eric. “All the clubs were there from the smallest to former Bristol players.”
