The girls are back in town

The England women’s rugby team will play Ireland at Twickenham Stadium on March 6th. The favourites to win the match, which kicks off at 1pm, this will be the second time that the women’s team has played on the hallowed turf. They kicked off last season’s Six Nations campaign at HQ against France, winning 57-0 en route to a Grand Slam.

Unbeaten in last season’s Six Nations and on tour in the Churchill Cup v Canada and the USA, the last head to head with Ireland saw them win 47-3 to secure the Slam.

RFUW Managing Director Rosie Williams said, “We are very excited to be back at Twickenham. Playing at the Home of England Rugby is daunting for any away team and we hope to capitalise on the occasion to produce an impressive display of women’s rugby.”

RFU Chief Executive Francis Baron said, “The RFU has developed a very strong and mutually productive working relationship with the RFUW. The England women’s team is hugely successful and, like the men’s side, will be defending a Grand Slam in 2004. The England women’s second international fixture at Twickenham will, I hope, form part of another successful Six Nations campaign for the team.”

Speaking of the women’s Twickenham fixture, England Coach, Geoff Richards, said, “This is a tremendous accolade for the players and very motivating. Playing in the national stadium is a great thrill for the team, who have worked hard to achieve 100% success over the past year. I would urge anyone coming to the men’s game to turn up early as we can promise them a match to remember which will demonstrate that those involved in the women’s game are, indeed, elite athletes.”

This season all of the women’s Six Nations fixtures, except for the one against Spain will coincide with the men’s matches. Why not make a diary date to watch them play Wales at The Stoop. Ticket hotline: 0871 8718877
