Pictured from left to right are Dave Broadwell, Referee Development Officer, Bertie Berger, Daniel Speller, and Bob Ockenden, Referee Training Officer at a National Foundation Referee Course held at London Welsh RFC recently.
Bertie was just under 12 years of age and Daniel had just turned 12 and both impressed colleagues. The course for 24 candidates was not specifically aimed at youngsters but both passed comfortably, and with higher marks than some of the adults.
Dave Broadwell checked with the boys’ parents to ensure that in their opinions they would be able to cope and sent each the course delegate booklet in advance. Dave also invited feedback to ensure there were no problems with the course materials. “In Bertie’s case, the only problems arising were that his younger brothers also wished to attend. They are now future prospects,” said Dave.
Daniel is a pupil at Caterham School in Surrey and has now begun refereeing at Dorking RFC in the mini/midi section. Next season he hopes to referee at school.
Bertie is a pupil at St Ronans School in Hawkhurst, Kent, and has started refereeing in the mini/midi section at Cranbrook RFC.
Both boys will hopefully remain refereeing in the mini/midi and youth age groups until they are 17 years old when they can progress to the senior sides.
