Schools Rugby

Herts flying start

By Huw Williams, Community Rugby Development Officer, East Herts

The RFU Emerging Schools Programme in Hertfordshire has been so successful this season that emerging schools from East Herts formed a select side to play fixtures with local rugby playing schools.

Teachers from the schools’ Year 10 (U15)  were so enthused by the children’s wish to participate that they asked the RDO to organise specialist sessions and to select a Barbarian style XV.

The most talented players were selected from: Cheshunt, Chauncey (Ware), Sele (Hertford), St Mary’s (Cheshunt), Sheredes (Hoddeson) and Turnford (Cheshunt).

The team is coached by Huw Williams (Community Rugby Development Officer - East Herts) with technical assistance from the RFU RDO Martin Gallagher and managed by Richard Taylor, Head of PE at the Chauncey School in Ware, and Jon Nagle from Turnford School in Cheshunt.

In their opening fixture they played Broxbourne School which was hosted by Cheshunt RFC and in a competitive game in miserable conditions they outscored their opponents by three tries to nil, with a half time score of 10-0.

The team showed great discipline and control when facing a more experienced opposition. They were captained by scrum half Carl Williams, with the pack led by blind-side flanker Harry Hlavaty.
