Pat Sanderson, the NEC Harlequins and England flanker, has been appointed the first playing Chairman of the Professional Rugby Players Association (PRA). Sanderson was voted in unanimously at the December meeting of the PRA Management Board. In his new role as Chairman, Pat will work together with his fellow Player Representatives to ensure that players continue to have a say in how their sport is governed.
Pat will be liaising closely with CEO and founder of the PRA, Damian Hopley. On his appointment Sanderson said, “I believe 100% in the PRA’s cause, and feel very strongly about player welfare, and improving our working conditions. Whilst many people see the glamour of a career in professional sports, there are many pitfalls that all players need to be prepared for.”
Former Chairman, Hopley added, “This is a key appointment in the evolution of the PRA. Pat has been in first class rugby for a long time, and has the respect of his peers throughout the game. I look forward to working alongside him and all the Player Representatives to safeguard the future of the players and the sport.”
The Association has already provided over £300,000 into various welfare, educational and benevolent projects for its members and will continue to work with the governing bodies to help protect their futures, both on and off the field. Having been plagued by shoulder injuries, Pat is better equipped than most to appreciate how vulnerable a player’s career can be and his appointment will give a hands-on insight into player issues in helping the PRA to move forward.
