The initiative is exploring what is possible in terms of rugby development with flexible educational support. Timetables have been arranged in such a way that talented young athletes can be released for specialist coaching, including strength and conditioning, rugby techniques and all other aspects of elite player development.
There are some 20 young players at each centre, with a majority of boys at Durham and a majority of girls at Bath. With the former being a further education college and Bath a specialist sports college this broad spectrum will help England Rugby Academies plan for future partnerships with education providers.
David Shaw, the RFU’s Director of Academies, who was there for the official opening in Durham recently and at a Bath open evening, said, “We are opening up additional avenues now for 16-year-old players wanting to combine education with their rugby development. The caliber of coaching staff and all the support services, together with the undoubted talent and enthusiasm of the youngsters is fantastic. All the England Rugby Academies will be watching the results of these pilot schemes to determine the way forward. |
