Three clubs recently played host to the regional triangular matches, with excellent contribution from the RFUW regional volunteers ensuring the success of the events. The regional teams were, at the time of writing, heading for a weekend of rugby at Lichfield RFC, which on the evidence of skill and commitment shown throughout the programme, promised to showcase some fine running rugby.
At Yarnbury RFC, the North East, North West & Yorkshire met and, in the initial U16 game, the North West took on Yorkshire. After trailing 5-15 at half time, the North West came back to win 20-19, with Meg Youden scoring three tries, captain Kirsty Marshall adding another. The North East U16s then defeated the North West 10-0.
In the U18 matches, the North East triumphed over the North West, winning 27-0. In the senior matches, the North West narrowly deafeated Yorkshire thanks to a powerful run from Pam Read, the ensuing try converted by Helen Clegg.
At Old Albanians RFC, the East, London & SE(E) and East Midlands fought it out, with the East Midlands U16s losing narrowly to London & SE(E) by 5-15, before beating the East 19-7. Kathy Burke, Harriet Billam and Emily Scarratt all crossed for tries, with Scarrat converting two out of three. The East U16 lost a close game against London & SE(E) 0 -5, Katherine Liakos proved to be the difference between the East Midlands and the East U18s. The match was evenly contested with the score 0-0 at half time. Two tries from Liakos proved decisive, however, and following a late try from the East, East Midlands held out to win 10-5. Liakos scored her third try of the day against London & SE(E) but the powerful, well drilled opposition turned around at half time 21-0 up, the East continued to perservere in both attack and defence and were rewarded with a consolation try London & SE(E) were also victorious against the East U18, winning 15-12.
In the senior games, a strong London & SE(E) scored nine tries in their 55-7 win over the East. Full back Vicky Dibolin scored a hat trick, with two tries coming from number 14, Sally Morris. However, the scoreline did not reflect the commitment and attitude of the East players.
