The Yorkshire Schools Rugby Competition at Doncaster Rugby Ground, Castlepark, included four nailbiting finals for the U14 to U18 competitions alongside an action-packed day of fun activities provided by the Army.
Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Otley, won the U18 final against Hall Crofts School Doncaster by 43-12 (pictured); Crossley Heath School beat St Wilfred’s College, Featherstone, 37-0 in the U16 final; South Hunsley School, Halifax, took the U15 title with their 15-12 win over Knottingley High School, Ferrybridge, and in the U14 final Bradford Grammar School drew 19-19 with Leeds Grammar School.
During the day, 40 soldiers from the Army entertained the spectators with various attractions, including a climbing wall, paintball range and laser dome. The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment also sponsored the trophy for the U18 champions.
The ‘Duke’s’ are the County Regiment of West and South Yorkshire where they have recruited for over 250 years and have a longstanding history of excellence in rugby. The Regiment’s rugby playing tradition dates back to 1872 and the Dukes have been the Army champions more times than any other Regiment with 11 international representatives in their ranks.
