Introduction by Terry Burwell

Welcome to the A-Z of Community Rugby, the manual designed to assist officials and administrators managing and supporting community grass roots rugby clubs. The Rugby Football Union Strategic Plan included the creation and production of this manual as a key strategy for assisting club officials to administer the sport by providing key infomation on a range of relevant topics.

With the help of the PMP Consultancy, Community Rugby and Operations staff and experienced CB and Club administrators we have tried to identify those areas of the game that requie 'Information Packs' and present them in a user friendly document. The manual is a live document seeking to share the knowledge and experience of the Community Rugby family for the benefit of everyone involved in rugby administration. As an example, the 'best practice' section has been developed to demonstrate how some of the clubs have achieved success in certain areas and how this may be adapted to other club's benefit.

The manual is divided into 4 sections with the topics arranged in A to Z format in the contents section. Each topic is allocated to one of the four main areas: Facilities, Funding, and Finance, Club Development and Administration and Management. New topics will be added to the initial priority areas that have been identified and these will be forwarded to each club as they are produced.

The A to Z of Community Rugby is a Blackman Initiative, intended to assist in reversing the decline in the adult game by making the job of the administration easier. It is part of the 'Valuing the Volunteer' programme we are developing with Sport England, demonstrating our committement to encouraging our most important resource, the club administrator. To this extent, as this is a 'live' document please pass on your examples of 'best practice' or suggest new topics or sections for inclusion in the manual.

I hope you find the manual invaluable, please provide the Community Rugby and Operations Department with your feedback and suggestions, we remain committed to working with you in administration and development of rugby in the community.
