England Women Impress In Six Nations Opener

England women got off to a storming start in the Six Nations Championship with a 71-3 win over Spain in Zaragoza today to begin their defence of the Six Nations Championship. Nicky Crawford led the team from the wing with four tries and fly half Shelley Rae added eight conversions to the overall total of eleven tries.

Emily Cooke scored three tries, including the opener after 12 minutes. Nicki Jupp, Jo Yapp and Paula George also added to the Spanish misery with tries. Worcester full back Kim Shaylor picked up her first England cap when she replaced George after 83 minutes.

Head coach, Geoff Richards was hugely positive after the game and full of praise for his England side: "It was a very pleasing result in great conditions. We played very, very well and despite the margin at half time we kept trying to play our own game at pace. Sometimes it didn't come off but we scored some great tries. Spain came back at us in the second half and we had to fight but we had too much pace for them out wide."

England travel to Netherdale RFC, Galashiels, next Saturday, to take on Scotland before their opening home game against Ireland at Twickenham on 6th March. Richards commented: "next week will be an entirely different kettle of fish against Scotland. They are playing at home and will be fired up after beating Wales 30-10 yesterday."
