Sunday 31st October
Blackheath 43 – Medway 5
Blackheath ladies secured their 4th victory of the season against Medway at home this weekend, leaving them only 1 point behind 2nd place in the South East 1 league.
The game kicked off with Blackheath playing into the sun and both teams struggled to settle in the opening period. After 10 minutes of scrappy play a quick ruck by Blackheath and fast hands through the backs widened the gaps for No.15 Elaine Jaxon to outpace the defence and score the opening try under the posts. The conversion by No. 13 Gina Inouaniello was successful. Medway came back at the home side from the restart and made the most of their size and strength to dominate the next phase of play, the forwards eventually driving over the line to score. Blackheath focused on returning to their faster paced game and were soon rewarded with a superb scoring run from No.14 Leanne Doubell following a scrum in their own half. The conversion by Gina was successful. A loose ball picked up by No. 9 Janet Livesey was switched to No. 2 Katie Lyne who also made the most of her speed to score from Medway’s 10m line. Gina converted again to take the game into half time with Blackheath leading 21-5.
Despite some frustrating handling errors Blackheath maintained their momentum after the break. One of many scrums won against the head lead to an attack through the backs that left Janet stopped just short of the line. A quick pick by No. 12 Genny Bisset opened the scoring in the second half. A series of powerful attacks by the forwards took the home side back deep into Medway’s 22. A switch from No. 10 Michelle Roast allowed replacement flanker Mandi Brunett to drive over the line just minutes after coming onto the pitch. A later loose pass by Medway in open play was intercepted by Michelle and resulted in a second score for Katie who reacted quickly to support. With only 5 minutes to play from the restart Blackheath created one last scoring attack. A steady platform from the forwards allowed quick hands through the backs to Elaine, who ran around the defence again to score her second try of the game in the left hand corner. Gina was successful with the conversion ending the game 43-5 to the hosts.
