Quins Beaten by Rampant Welsh in Local Derby

London Welsh 15 - Harlequin Ladies 0)

On a damp and grey afternoon Harlequin Ladies suffered a defeat, in their third friendly of the season, against London Welsh writes Katy Strudwick.

Having received the kick-off, Harlequins drove forward into London Welsh's half - a determined start, but one that was to be short-lived as Quins lost possession in the ruck and London Welsh exploited gaps in Quins defence to score the first try of the match 8 minutes in.

Quins restarted the game and gave chase, but struggled to organise themselves and form the strong defensive line that has aided them in previous wins.  Both sides traded kicks and penalties as they fought to retain possession.  Despite some strong running by Laura Quinn and Charlotte Butler, Quins could not keep the ball long enough to make use of the dynamic moves in the backs.

London Welsh again won possession from the rucks and took the ball back to Quins and deep into their 22, where they formed a strong driving maul to push forward and over the line, scoring a second try before half time.

In the second half Quins started to put things together with scrum half Amy Wellington and second row Kyra Howell making their presence felt on the pitch and lower tackles hitting their mark.  However, Quins efforts were in vain as London Welsh scored a 3rd try sealing their win, having taken advantage throughout the game of the open spaces and sometimes controversial refereeing.

Quins will need to work hard on aspects of their game if they want to overcome their recent loses and win their next league game away against Ipswich on Sunday 14 November 2004.
