Sunday 14th November
Blackheath ladies took second place in the National Challenge 1 South East League yesterday with a hard fought victory over visiting Hove.
Transport troubles for Hove delayed kick-off until 3, when Blackheath received the ball looking into the low sun. The first 20 minutes of the match were evenly matched with penalties awarded frequently to both teams. A long kick by Blackheath, chased down by No. 11, Elaine Jaxon initiated a 10 minute period of sustained pressure during which Blackheath did not leave Hove’s 22. Twice in succession the Blackheath forwards broke through the first line of defence allowing the ball to be passed quickly through the backs to No. 14, Jane Petrie. Despite strong running both attempts were pushed into touch by the visiting defence. Repeated attempts by Hove to move up-field were thwarted by Blackheath’s forwards. Firstly No 4, Lauren Wolman stealing Hove’s lineout ball and then No 2, Captain Mandi Brunett charging down the clearance kick. A maul from the 5m line was driven on by Blackheath but Hove succeeded in holding up No 6, Lindi Ngwenya on the line. Despite failure to convert the repeated pressure into a try a penalty near the posts allowed No 13, Gina Inouaniello to open the scoring with a kick. A period of pressure from Hove followed the score but was kept in check by Blackheath who went into half time ahead by 3 points.
The second half kicked off under the floodlights and Blackheath’s forwards continued to dominate the game, maintaining the majority of possession and repeatedly turning over ball in open play. A penalty 10 minutes into the half was kicked well out of the home side’s 22 by No 9, Janet Livesy. The line-out, taken cleanly by No 7, Katie Lyne, was driven on and the ball passed out through the backs to No 15, Caz Royle who broke her tackle to reach the opposition 22 before offloading to Elaine who ran in to score under the posts. The conversion by Gina was charged down. Hove continued to battle for a score but Blackheath were solid in defence. Two quick penalties in succession saw Blackheath back in the visitor’s 22 and a further penalty allowed Gina to add another 3 points to the score. Finally a quick tapped penalty was spun wide to Elaine who made the most of her speed to dive into the right hand corner for her second try. The conversion was unsuccessful leaving the final score 16 – 0 to Blackheath who now move above Hove in the league for the first time this season.
