Ivel Barbarians’ Marlie Packer was a hat-trick hero crossing for two tries in the first-half and a third after the restart. Blaydon’s Kate Hall also enjoyed a successful afternoon with a brace of tries while Worcester hooker Jenny Mills joined Packer and Hall on the score-sheet with her own touchdown. Saracens fly-half April Brown was as consistent as ever with the boot kicking five conversions and a penalty.
The win hands England Under 19s a clean sheet this season after a 31-7 win over the USA last month and a 29-5 victory over Canada just seven days ago.
Number 10 Brown got England off to an early lead with a ninth minute penalty, but the young-guns then had to wait until the 22nd minute for flanker Hall’s first try which saw the forwards and backs successfully execute a well drilled move from the scrum on Scotland’s 22.
Then the floodgates opened with Packer scoring the first of her three tries. From 30 metres out the ball came out from the back of a ruck to pass through Brown and Crawley’s Justina De Brett. Packer then joined the line and ran in to score on the left wing. Brown added the conversion to hand England a 15 point cushion.
Packer then wrapped up the second half with a 36th minute try after a line-out, catch and drive move from 15 metres out, with Brown finally popping the ball out to Packer when England were camped on Canada’s try-line. Brown converted to hand England a 22-0 lead at half-time.
After the break the one way traffic continued with Mills this time scoring a converted try from a scrum before Packer claimed her hat-trick on 57 minutes. This time the score came from a penalty 14 metres out with Brown offloading to the flanker who muscled her way over the line. Brown again converted.
Number 6 Hall had the final say with a superb 79th minute try, which saw the move starting from a line-out on the 22-metre line. The England backs and forwards recycled the ball through several pairs of hands, from the left to the right wing, before Hall pounced on the ball to score England’s sixth and final try.
England Under 19s Head Coach Giselle Mather said: “This is a really pleasing win and a good end to the three test series. Our defence was excellent today and we managed to put enough pressure on Canada to give them lots of problems. Our ball retention has also improved massively which meant we were able to make lots of breaks.
“The girls have been on a real journey over these past three games and they have all improved, not only as a team but as individuals which is visible for everyone to see. If these players keep up this work rate and keep playing to their potential then the future of women’s rugby in England is in safe hands.”
