Cuban Monte Christos - sometimes Honduran Churchills.
This isn't an argument, I was simply expressing an opinion, I didn't expect it to find any favour inthe forum. By the way, remind me, is the Lions like the Ryder cup, do the players go unpaid for the honour of representing the collective countries?

The Lions? a relic?
. . . what are you smoking? The Lions are more popular, more supported and more appealing than ever
I'm not even going to enter into an argument as to why - ask almost any player in this years six nations what their hope and ambition is by the end of it and it will be to go to SA with the Lions.
Ask Shane Williams, Danny Cipriani, Brian O'Driscoll or Steve Borthwick if they're a relic.
Get real.

Reluctantly I'm coming round to Alforth's viewpoint. But surely it's far too early to think about Lions selection until the 6N gets under way.

Suerly the impact of the ELVs are so major that we will have to wait a few months to see which of our NH pros can run around like headless chickens and participate in a Garry Owen contest...

Alforth,
Don't sit on the fence there mate, tell me what you really think :-)
I must say that I am completely of the opposite opinion, I think that a place for these tours should be found in the modern schedules, I also think that the international tours should be longer proper ones, not just the 'fly in, play and fly out again' variety.
In my opinion it seems that rugby through proessionalism has become little more than a job and the longer international tours especially the Lions one allow the players to have a bit more fun and to get out and interact with the locals. On the rare occasions that this happens on tours I have heard players saying how much they enjoyed it and what a refreshing change it was to the repetitive daily grind.
What is wrong with keeping some of the amateur ethos in a professional world?

Hi Shotty
My thoughts on this for what they are worth (probably not much) are that I don't give a damn who they pick for the Lions, or who coaches for that matter. The thing is a relic of the amateur days, probably a treasured relic of equally treasured days but a relic nevertheless. The issue has become devisive and, in these days of full-time professional players, appears to do little to enhance northern emisphere rugby in either a national or collective sense.

I would be interested to see what Lions team people would pick now assuming all players were fit and available.
Another could also be picked when the squad is announced to see how close anyone got.
Here's mine anyway
1. Sheridan 2. Flannery 3. Stevens 4. O'Connell 5. Borthwick 6. White 7. Rees 8. Jones 9. Peel 10. Cipriani 11. Williams 12. Henson 13. O'Driscoll 14. Bowe 15. Byrne
16. Jenkins 17. Mears 18. O'Callaghan 19. Haskell 20. Blair 21. Hook 22. Horgan
Thoughts please
