Quick throws (again!)
Forum Home > Referees > Quick throws (again!)

Whistleblower Law 19.4 'the throw in is taken by an opponent of the player who last held or touched the ball before it went into touch. When there is doubt the attacking team throws in'. If players from both sides have hands on the ball there is doubt as to who carried into touch.

Still don't understand why a quick throw isn't possible after a maul goes into touch if it is clear who should get the throw and no-one, other than the ball carrier, touches the ball before an opponent takes it from him.

Law 19.2 (d) "For a quick throw-in, the player must use the ball that went into touch. If, after it went to touch and was made dead, another ball is used, or if another person has touched the ball apart from the player throwing it in, then the quick throw-in is disallowed. The same team throws in at the line-out."

I suggest it makes sense to interpret "after it went into touch" etc as meaning that actions involved in putting the ball into touch are excluded.

In the case of a tackle, the tackled player therefore does not count, and must release to ball to an opponent who wants to take a quick throw-in.

In the case of a maul, the situation is too unclear to allow a quick throw-in.

Some good points here.

Acmethunderer - I tried to find your justification in law and failed (but my wife points out I'm hopeless at looking for things). Do you have a ruling or a law reference to point to? In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I'd assume the side that took it into the maul still had the ball, and award to the other side -consistent with "use it or lose it".

OB - I'd agree absolutely as regards the maul - ball touched by other players while in touch, so no possibility of a quickie. So why not when a single player [player A] takes it into touch, drops it, where it is picked up by Player B and thown quickly? (In law - I accept that I'd allow it in practice).

ob why can't a player of the team entitled to throw the ball in after a maul goes into touch not grab the ball, run a metre or so towards his own line, and throw it in quickly? As an aside, what many players fail to recognise is that when a maul goes into touch, if there are hands from both teams on the ball, the put in should go to the attacking team and not necessarily against the ball carrier.

Single player - yes.

Maul - no.

I should know the answer to this but the ELVs, with the increased likelihood of a quick throw, have highlighted this gap in my understanding....hopefully you knowledgeable people can clarify.

Red playing Blue: Red winger is ball carrier and is tackled into touch and releases the ball; assuming nobody else touches the ball can a Blue player pick up the ball and have a quick throw (or is the tackled Red player considered to have touched the ball once it is in touch and dead?).

Or how about when a maul with several hands on the ball goes into touch - can a player from the relevant team take the ball and have a quick throw?

Cheers guys (and gals)
