You have my sympathy and admiration for managing to convince the ref that the game should go on. Games are being blighted by individuals who attempt apply there own opinions and views to the game. A blanket ban on items of kit which are legal and allowed by an invidual prior to a match does little enhance credability

A continuation of the "should they be allowed" threads. Fact is that the Adidas Traxion aluminium blades are, currently, legal and it looks unlikely that they will be taken off the list - money/sponsor pressures etc. Having said that, my son's school team almost didn't get to play their Middlesex League match on Saturday as half a dozen of them wear blades - either moulded or aluminium - and the referee (from the opposing, home team, school)was not going to allow ANY blades on the pitch! Nothing to do with the condition of the offending items. A blanket ban. He was eventually persuaded that that was not the way to proceed but a bit more guidance from the RFU would be quite helpful.

Sadly Blades ARE leagal, even worse the replacable metal blades are also legal (currently) part of an experiment. In otherwords the IRB can not / will not tell the major boot manufactures that these boots will not be legal in our game. I ALWAYS advise parents to purchase normal rugby / football boots with removable studs. We also check the boots of ALL our youngsters, if we find illegal / dangerous studs they are removed and replaced with Aluminium Studs which as a club we supply. If a player turns up with Blades they either take part in trainers, borrowed boots or they don't take part at all. In my opinion the safety of the youngsters taking part is parramount. I wish all clubs did the same.

Blades are generally moulded into the sole of the boot in the same way as moulded studs are and, if made of the same or similar material as the soles are considered safe and, more importantly, legal, to play in. There are some types of blades which are replaceable and, I believe, are made of aluminium but I have not seen them myself. These would be illegal as they are not "moulded", do not carry the "Kite Mark" and do not conform to the sizes laid down in the IRB Laws
There is still confusion concerning why some football studs cannot be used as many look similar to rugby studs but are not technically legal. The reasoning behind this is that "Kite Marked" studs are made from a particular grade of aluminium that does not form sharp burrs when they become worn down and reamin smooth and therefore safe throughout their life. Aluminium football studs are made from different grade aluminium which can form sharp burrs.
Many "sports" shops do not understand the differences so parents should be advised to ask for "Rugby Boots" so they can be returned as "not suitable for purpose" under the Sale of Goods Act if they do not conform.

Just what is the definitive answer here. are blades allowed or not. Coaches seem to have a differant opinion everywhere i go. My understanding was that BS kitemarked rugby studs are the only acceptable standard. Being kitemarked they are at least of a recognised standard. Am i possibly leaving myself open to complaints or even litigation if a child is injured as a result of these blades..??????
