mpj - you're right ... he should have been sent off. The incident was very similar to the incident that ended Doddie Weir's tour to Sth Africa with the Lions in 1997.
Prop comes in to ruck and kicks an opponents lower leg / shin with the sole of his boot - thereby bending the leg against the natural bend of the knee. It is analogous to an over the top tackle in Soccer that would most certainly be red carded. Doddie Weir's knee was wrecked and he did not play for months - and I recall much talk in the press at the time of thuggery etc. It was pure luck that the English player on the receiving end on Saturday was not similarly injured.

Shorn I did not see the incident to which you refer but assuming the stamp was forcible and we are dealing with foul play would not a red card be more appropriate than yellow.

As a ref lucky enough to have a couple of tickets and a saturday afternoon off ! I thought the replacement ref was as good as they get. I listened to him through the ref link radio and was very impressed. I realise that the majority of speckies are on the box so the televised specticle should targetted in that direction etc etc yawn yawn see previous items on this subject but as a specky at the match the game was very good and both refs deserve every penny of their very moderate expenses!

From the armchair spectators point of view I understand why you felt the sub/ref spoiled the game. You must understand however that he does not have the luxury of 'instant replays' to see infringements on the far side of a plethora of writhing bodies to where he is standing. However I do agree that to an extent some descisions were inconsistant with the refereeing of the game up to the point where he took over. There was already players warned for playing the ball on the floor;he should have stamped his authority on the game by using the yellow card when this offence next reared it's head instead of the many warnings he had to give after that. What do you think?

How did you think the ref who took over played in this game. I think he spoiled it an awful lot. Some bad decisions, however another important England win, I think it's fair to say we are in the top 2
