'Perfect' practice makes perfect. Don't forget to practice lineouts when your players are tired from intensity, otherwise you will wonder why your pack cannot secure 1st phase possession in the final quarter of the game. DL

Quality throwing is a closed skill which the hooker would be well advised to practice in his own time in addition to the time spent durring Club sessions. In exactly the same way as the Goal Kicker and Scrum Half (passing). The main technique for throwing at the lineout has one or two minor variations on the theme, but basically virtually all throwers used the same technique. (For a Righthanded thrower) The player should stand with his feet about shoulder width apart with the left foot slightly further forward than the right. This will square up his body to aid a straight throw. He should hold the ball lightly with his right hand in the last third of the ball, his left hand should rest lightly on the front third of the ball (this hand is only a guide). He draws the ball above / behind his head and flexes his knees, arching his back. He will then use the spring like energy trapped in his body like catapult to either fire or lob the ball to his target in accordance with what is required by the team. It is crucial, for timing purposes that the hooker develops THREE distinct points in his build up to finally releasing the ball. These points will give the jumpers a count down for their jump and improve the overall percentage.

The major problem I have found when teaching hookers to throw is they don't lead the throw with their elbows. When throwing, if they have one (or both) elbows splayed to the sides the chance of the throw going staight is diminished. Once the are getting the throw close to straight I have them work on getting their power from their back rather than their shoulders (by relying on their shoulders I find that they stat splaying their elbows again). The best way I have found to do this is to have them practice on their knees to eliminate their legs. This in turn makes them think about their backs. Then, as Rabster said 'Practice,practice,practice!'

Does anyone have any specific deatils on the hooker's throw in the lineout, how to best throw the ball, and how to improve the throw through different methods of training?
