Didds,

Physios (which is now a protected title) refers to a Chartered Physiotherapist who has done a degree and is registered with the HPC and a member of the Chartered society. Ideally they should have finished their junior post grad training.

Ideally if they are working in sports medicine they should have a post grad degree/qualification in this subject. They should also have at minimum a first aid certificate or more ideally a sports trauma qualification. This also goes for doctors. Just because someone is a qualified as a doctor does not mean they know anything about sports trauma. Having worked in this area for 20 years as a physio with an MSc in Sports injury and traume, I have come across some very inept practitioners.

Sports therapists as a title means ??? I would need to see their qualifications before they got involved with players/patients.

Much work has been done to improve the quality of sports medicine in this country over the last 10 years or so and there is still a long way to go.

Remember physios/doctors should have post grad qualifications in sports medicine and a ist aid/sports trauma qualification.

With regard to students they should not be working un-supervised. They have no insurance nor would they be able to get insurance as they are not qualified. A physio has to be a member of the Chartered Society and registered by the HPC. They will then have their public liability insurance.

I have a more rugby club specific query regarding this area on the community rugby firum too, but this is more specific to the status of the above.

What IS the difference between a sports therapist and a physio?

Would one expect a physio nad/or sports therapist to also have a 1st aid qualification?

what is the insurance aspect (via rfu insurances via marsh etc) for someone acting as a physio/sports therpist that maybe a student ie not qualified yet?
