I have managed to dig out the essay, but a couple of diagrams are missing, so there may be a little delay.
I will also include space for Simon to add in his extras - will half a page do?

Simon Thomas: Did I miss anything ?
Make and style of boot, traction of stud. Per RWC moans, whether the ball had previously been "kicked in".

spike, OB... I am MASSIVELY sad WRT maths stuff... feel free to post OB!!
Reminds me of my youth when I was really into cricket, sitting my Statistics degree final practical paper, which included a marvellous question about varying heights of cricket balls bouncing on a wicket, the analyis of the data and discussion of pertinent factors which may invalidate the data. *sigh*. Them were the days!!

the whistleblower - "The distance out is simply a trade-off between distance and angle. You narrow the angle by going further back, but it becomes harder and harder to achieve the distance."
When I did M101 with the Open University, I was delighted to find one question dealt with taking conversion kicks. I can therefore produce a full mathematical treatment of the problem.
You are advised NOT to ask for it!

ref was talking out his bottom.
However - it is the "problem" with junior rugby that society refs generally speaking have enough to do already on a weekend w/out also being available for youth games as well (that's not a dig chaps!). Also AIUI a society appointed ref has a cost associated with it (travel etc) and this may be unfeasible for some clubs. Consequently, youth matches tend to rely on a volunteer (often a coach) to ref the game (aka a "club appointed referee") - who in the vast majority of cases is unlikely to have any formal refreeing training and arguably worse hav ethe likes of Stuart Barnes and Murray Mexted as their laws advisors ;-) The RFU refrees department now has a specific workshop aimed at Continuum rugby reffing, and the ELRA course (basic refs course) is open to all. Other clubs may of course differ but I as a CCC have found it impossible to find anybody interested in attending such workshops and courses.
Consequently the players get what is available, and bizarre law interpretations such as this are unsurprising.

The distance out is simply a trade-off between distance and angle. You narrow the angle by going further back, but it becomes harder and harder to achieve the distance. In front of the posts at any elvel of rugby, it would be remarkable to see a kick taken from as far back as the 22m line. I guess 15m would be more normal.

U13 normal rules apply. At mini rugby U11/12 the kick is taken infront of the posts irrespective of where the try was scored.

Could I trouble you knowledgable people for a bit of advice please.
At last weekend's game for the Under 13 squad I coach the referee insisted on all conversion kicks being taken from the 22 line. Whilst at the time I was happy for this and our kickers were reasonably happy and successful one of our parents was not impressed with the directive from the ref (although didn't mention anything at the time) and asked me to confirm the distance kicks should be taken from. Having looked through the laws all I can see is it is taken on a line through where the try was scored but no mention of how far out it should be. The section I've looked at is 9.B.1. Any help or advice gratefully received.
Thanks Spike
