I think so too.

In my experience its the parents & coaches who are worried about contact.

The kids don't really have any problems with it. Some take to it right away, others find it intimidating and will tend to avoid it during games until they mature a little.

But few, if any, are afraid of the idea of it. Most are desperate to have a go!

7-2

It's a while ago now, but we introduced as a little bit of fun at the end of most sessions. Start of U9 season is really hard work if you don't.

We also took the 8's to watch the 9's play, which was valuable. Half the squad were fearful of contact, thinking it was going to be as violent as prem rugby and half were looking forward to it being as violent as prem rugby. Both saw it for what it was and relaxed.

I am very surprised to be out voted 4-1 by the "leave it all to September" opinion.

Hey ho, what do I know? (a rhetorical question, it does not need an answer Russ)

Just picking up the enjoyment and something new element as a reason for doing contact early. I'd suggest that each session on whatever subject should feel new to the players anyway but regardless of that using the same argument will we be looking at coaching contested scrums next January and handoffs and lifting in the lineout etc.
If we are looking to make it fun and enjoyable I'd look at the way we coach want we need to coach now.
It is only my experience and opinion which would lead me to not coach any contact until much much later and propably leave it until September if I was going back to coaching that age group.

I am afraid that I agree with mlegg and also having done it twice! Once you start the contact element that is all they want to do and it only acts as a distraction when you are trying to really focus efforts on prepare for the county level champioships.
IMHO!

I'm here; thanks for the heads up Paul!

This appears to be another "error" made during the re-formatting process. As far as I am concerned the dispensation remains, in that U8's only may practice contact from 1st February onwards. Contact may not be taken into competitive games under any circumstances.

The reason for this dispensation is to allow next season's U9 coach a bit of a head start with coaching his players with all the new elements of the game. The U9 coach has a lot to do and the CRG believes this goes part way to helping out with all this new learning.

AIUI the official line is that tackling only could be introduced for training only from feb 1st.

This has been pointed out to now be missing from the contionuum etc.

Calling Andy (Dixon) !!!!

Just been through the transition from U8's to U9's (for the second time!). Leave all contact to September and concentate on how to catch, pass and run for the blance of the season. A few reasons;

1. Catching, passing and running is what it's all about
2. Some kids will get put off by early introduction of contact
3. They will have forgotten it all come September.

gerard_jenkins Mon, 07 January 08 18:35 GMT

Totally agree with enjoyment. If they didn't enjoy what they were currently doing they wouldn't have kept attending for potentially 1.5 seasons. The continium is not perfect but the thinking behind the progression is sound and it's first two years don't include contact. Why introduce it ahead of schedule and for whos benefit? If everyone sticks to it then everyone starts at the same point at U9. If they don't, for what purpose was contact introduced early? For development or to win? You'll find they all clatter into bags with shoulders hitting arms out to wrap, legs driving but put them on the pitch and only a minority will see it through properly, unfortunately young kids will still see bigger stronger kids and it takes a while to comprehend that good technique will overcome size etc at 8 years old I'm not sure they're mature enough to understand this.
My son has benefitted from contact in the contribution "he feels" he makes, he is not light on his feet and elusive but I'd still contend that "we" introduce contact a year too early.

Generally, I don't agree with Gerard & Spike.

There is a lot to learn going into U9 and contact rugby. I believe it is a better educational process to introduce contact tackling from February and revisit it in September. I don't accept the children will forget everything over the summer. The four Sundays in September will seem a very short time otherwise.

You shouldn't get any problems when they play tag this season either. They know what is tag rugby and what is contact rugby, they are not that stupid.

I do however agree with Spike about running into tackle bags. Drills involving stepping round tackle bags, as they get older, should be the focus.

Generally everyone enjoys doing something new and different. Surely enjoying your Sunday mornings is objective number one?

I would leave it all to the September of next season. You will only have problems where some-one puts their newly learnt skill into practise in a match or some super keen parent tapping the under 9s to see if little jonny can play for them as he is way past tag rugby.
Also and this is only my opinion but the way in which this new skill is coached is critical. Use of tackle shields imo encourages people to run into other people. For the first two years of these players rugby experience the whole focus is to run into space. To nick a phrase from this very forum and apologies to the author cause I can't remember who said it but.....'Run at spaces not at faces'.

Rugby is a game of evasion with contact involved at times. This sadly is some times missed at this very early stage when coaches drill these young players into running into things.

From experience I'd leave it all until next season. When learning anything new it's practice where improvements are made and then it becomes habit. They can't play contact regularly and with the off season break most will have forgotten it by next season anyway.
Totally accept they'll be mad for it but concentrating on passing skills and space awareness will stand them in much better stead.
Introduce a tackle bag as a treat in the last month as a reward for good practice sessions on above.
Good luck.

I seem to remember it is tackling only and from 1st February, but I cannot find any reference to this in the current continuum.

I think lots of players and coaches are bored with tag by the 2nd half of the U8 season and stretch the definition of tackling though.

My head coach has just started, this week to introduce contact, focussing on tackling. I seem to have read somewhere that this should not be introduced until Feb so just wanted to make sure that we are covered.
If we are are we also free to coach rucking / mauling / line out, scrums towards the end of this year, obviously noy now in readiness for contact in the U9 next season.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
