Ah! But is that a new and correctky inflated "kicked in" ball or a new and correctky inflated ball before "kicking in"? And what is the procedure for "kicking in" a size 3 - that is not meant to be kicked ever? Do we give it a good dropping intead?
Seriously though, Unless the thing is actually flat (and I don't just mean a bit soft) how much difference will there be?
And do balls grow or shrink with age?

If I were irretrieivably cynical or had Gilbert not been so helpful, then I might suggest that the "Touch" size ball is as near to a Size 4 as does not matter and that it is therefore probably a mere marketing excercise rather than a 'real' size at all.
It's interesting (in an etymological sort of way) that the iRB does not seem to mention "Size 5" anywhere. How did these sizes (5,4,and 3) get their names?
And whoever decided to name the Mini & Midi balls should be shot - unless whoever named Mini & Mini RUGBY did it after the balls were named - in which case they should be shot instead. In any case, the idea that Mini and Midi balls are not what you use for Mini & Midi rugby is pretty indefensible.
I know soccer has sizes 5,4 and 3. Did we copy this from them? I think basketball have thoses sizes too. Where did this all start? Anyone know?

interesting information. I always thought that Touch was played with a Size 4 ball. It seems Gilbert disagrees - though only marginally.

HighsideUK - many thanks for finding out this information. This explains why some of our size 4 balls are the same size or smaller than our size 3 balls. A standard would be nice but I think I will now ask about the dimensions of the balls before ordering in the future. Thanks again

A very very helpful person at Gilbert told me all this...
The only size ball governed by the IRB are size 5 balls. This means that the sizes for 4 and 3 are not regulated by the IRB - they say that balls for younger players can be sized appropriately.
I have spoken to our Gilbert Ball engineer who has added the following statement; ‘’We have had size 4 and 3 balls in our range for over 10 years, and they are recognised as the industry standard sizes for 4 and 3 - however to my knowledge there has never been a meeting between manufacturers to agree on a certain size and weight for these balls’’
Ball Dimensions Length (mm) Circular Length (mm) Circular Girth (mm) Weight (g) Size 5 280 752 584 440 Size 4 275 721 555 365 Size 3 255 680 537 343 Super Midi 247 651 495 277 Midi 235 580 415 214 Mini 160 407 315 115 Touch 277 727 557 369

Does anyone know what the official dimensions of size 3 and size 4 Rugby balls are ? There appears to be so much difference between manuafactures, in some cases a size 4 is smaller than someone elses size 3.
Many thanks Simon
