For Scotland and other teams that can't score tries, you are right - especiially with the new ELV's there will be fewer shots at the posts....

And don't forget that 73.6% of all statistics are made up.

Probably, but there are certainly a few liars and plenty of damn liars.

Percentage of success is a poor statistic, as the Patterson case shows. I have a 75% rate with my club - 3 out of 4. I am a lousy kicker.
We need a statistic that takes distance and angle into account. Is there a statistician in the house?

Generally when people talk about quality kickers, they refer to the percentage of success, and Paterson is way up there with the best in the world, so you gotta say he has it. His points per game average is also high, if I remember correctly.

Best in the world he may not be but the man is consistent. He might not have the biggest boot in the world and he knows that. He is however accurate and you can have to respect a kicker who is accurate as they will make you pay from penalties and the such like. He might not be able to stick it over from ten metres inside his own half, but he will plug away at you given the chance. And before you think i am patriotic, I am an Englishman, yeah we have JW and now DC but Pats is a good kicker... P.s I am a Gloucester fan too

Nicks World: Patterson doesn't just kick from the 22m in front of the posts, you know. He slots great kicks from difficult angles. He also knows exactly where his limit is, and doesn't let his ego take over when he doubts his ability to convert. As a skipper, would you rather face an opposition running at you out of their own 22m because your kicker conned himslef into thinking he was better than he was, or would you rather he told you it was beyond his range adn kicked you into the corner for a catch and drive?
If P were ever to break JW's points record, would we argue that it didn't count as he declined the ones he couldn't convert? Every kicker has his range - greatness comes not from making the big ones occasionally, but from knowing when not to make the attempt.
it will be interesting wathcing Francois Steyn as he tries to learn what P already knows.

He doesn't take long kicks because he knows his range. Parks was on the pitch by that stage, so he took the long range penalty (and this was 100% the right decision because he secured the 3 points) I smell sour grapes here - your JW missed a couple of kicks - but like everything else in the England performance there was no Plan B, when he was clearly off form (actually, was there a Plan A??) 30 kicks out of 30 at International level "because they were all easy kicks" - give me a break and post something of value!

i really dont understand how the Scots can say Chris Paterson is the best kicker in the world. Thay all say how he hasnt missed a kick since last year, but has anyone else noticed that he only ever takes the easier kicks. if they are at a hard angle or far away he gives them to Dan Parks. I accept he is a good kicker but there is no way he is the worlds best!
