Festivals Dilemma

13 is indeed a maximum from the Continuum's point of view, but the tournament can, in my view, legitimately make it a requirement to play the maximum, in order to maintain comparability.

In your shoes, I'd darned well go, and if you can't field a full team on the day, make that point known to the organisers early on - well before the first match. I'd assume with these number problems you're not planning on winning the cup, so offer to withdraw from the competitive aspect. Go down to 12-a-side , and get agreement up front that all other teams will match your 12. That way, after all games everyone except you has played the same number of 13-a-sides, and one 12-a-side - and you're not looking to win a trophy anyway.

From the organiser's perspective, he'd be much happier to carry on with you in the frame, without radically changing his plans. No-one is disadvantaged except you, they all face a level playing field (though not a uniform one), and all results are directly comparable (except yours).

This seems the best way to deal with the issue. Continuum is about development. This approach achieves it for all sides - any other one doesn't.

I'd avoid being lent a player or two, if I were you.

I like it. Great suggestion. I must know at least two clubs really well in the area. Worth a go...

ask the festival orgainsers for guidance. If they reject your suggestion/request, respond by asking them if they could suggest another club that historically struggles to give all their players a game with a view to you approaching that club and ask if they would be able to lend you a couple of players for the day - let the festival organisers know this is your plan though in case they anally wish to kibosh you (better you are kiboshed in advance rather than on the day).

If you do get kiboshed, ask the orgainsers then if they know of any other clubs in a similar position to yourself and then go direct to syuch clubs and ask if they woud like to play you on that day instead!

just a couple of ideas ot three...

We have (in theory) a decent-sized U12 squad at my club but, due to sporadic attendance (not always caused by lack of commitment I'll add), it is not quite enough to put out two full squads (ie of 18 players maximum for each) for both the A and the development festivals coming up. We should be able to get a strong 16 out for the A festival, but will struggle to enter a full squad (perhaps not even a full team) for the development festival. What should we do?

Obviously as coaches, we can be proactive and can get a commitment from the players (and more to the point, their parents) that they will not be making other plans on the appropriate weekend which will help, and in theory we might be able to get 14-15 out for the development team, but on the day we might only be able to get 11-12 out.

What is the etiquette on this? The Continuum stipulates that it is a MAXIMUM of 13-a-side, but is it bad form to enter the festival knowing that this might be touch and go? And obviously we will be hard against it if there are any injuries.

My take on it is, to hell with etiquette and bad form. I'd rather see 11 kids playing something than have nobody play anything. And if somebody gets hurt we can play 10-a-side.

How would you react if you were at a festival and the coach from the other team came to you at the start of a game and, rather coyly, stated that they are really struggling to get the second team out, do you mind playing 11-a-side?

Thoughts???
