elv pullng down the maul

Hi all

IMHO the IRB have totally contadicted their stance on saftey in the game.

It was only 18 months ago that the engauge sequence for the scrum was changed with saftey being put as one of the main factors in this decision, with not many complaints as majority could see the logic of this & it has worked reasonably well.

But they have now introduced a change that could cause more injuries at all levels, not just junior & mini.

If any player, small or large, collapses a maul of 3 or more players they run the risk of being trampled under foot, have joints twisted, crush injuries, etc. Sheer weight of numbers & general momentum of the maul dictates this. Perhaps this is a little melodramatic, but have the IRB seriously looked at the implications for injury.

Some will say look at the S14 & what it has done there. But you are looking at professional athletes in S14, & we all know that this is a different game to club/grassroots rugby, especially in the N hemesphere.

The IRB should listen to all voices on this before deciding retrospectivly to act. If the Austrailians want to change, then let them do it in their own back yard & suffer the consequenses, as I don`t think the NZ or SA unions want this change either, judging by feedback on other websites.

I understand all the arguments for speeeding up the game, but if you want a quicker game of rugby, look at 7`s or rugby league. As a TV spectacle RU is great, look at the viewing figures for WC07 & 6N, & SKY seem to do well out of, so if it aint broke dont fix it.

Maybe this is a little bit of a simplistic view of this ELV, but it needs to be looked at again, before something goes wrong.

Thanks All

I do not know if you have seen the following statement on the continuum thread.

The RFU has published the following:

"The RFU appreciates participants of the Game are seeking guidance and/or training materials from them urgently. They need to provide all participants with high quality information and material once :

a) the wording of the ELVs as it will appear in the Law Book has been received from the iRB
b) they have obtained clarification regarding the impact on the Youth Game
c) had an opportunity to facilitate further discussion between selected referees and coaches on the implications of the ELVs.

The proposed process is :

28th/29th June - National Panel Officials conference takes place. National League coaches and RFU development staff will be invited to further consider the refereeing, coaching and playing implications of the ELVs
w/c 30th June - guidance and appropriate training materials will be provided to Referee Societies, clubs, universities and schools.
July/August - through the CB Coaching Committees, RFU Coach and Referee Development staff are organising CB training workshops at which the implications for refereeing, coaching and playing will be discussed."

(Thanks to Simon Thomas of Hampshire Referee's Society.) """""""""""""

On a personal note I would wait for some guidance from the RFU before contemplating coaching such a dangerous action.

hopefully it wont be ratified in the continuum and youth age groups !!!!!

regards

as a coach of both mini/midi & adult i be putting in to practic this new law however how many mini/midi coachs think it wrong to teach this to the kid as a ref as well seeing how some kid's are more bigger then others some kid going to get hurt is this the way forward in the game we all love to play, coach or ref. i for one will not teach it to the kid unless the club want me to then i be asking for better insurance for my self in case mam & dad's want to sue me
