If you're still concerned, check out the PRS website - and contact the RFU. They should know.

I would suggest you take it with a huge pinch of salt.
There are scammers around trying to extract money from "easy touches", and pose as PRS sometimes.
Way back when I was self employed and got a couple of letters claiming to be from a PRS-like organisation. I was sufficiently suspicious to ignore it and never heard anything again.
Consider it to be akin to an email from a Nigerian Colonel needing your help to liberate a couple of million quid....

If club has a TV then:
1. they must have a TV license,
2 if they are watching Sky, & as Didds said, watching MTV, they must pay a commercial fee as it is in a public place.
Therefore are you not covered & already paying via these 2 avenues for Performing rights?
Sounds like poor musicians trying to get more money from a vunerable source.
Have also been told they (PRS) are send letters out to companies who have radio in their workshops/offices demanding £147 to do this, so it is not just rugby they are targeting.
is this just the tip of the iceberg, have they been taking lessons from one G Brown?
You have been warned.

A little more research ...
PRS covers MUSIC.
Their stance must be that a TV in a bar may be used to provide music for customers - e.g. MTV, Top Of the Pops, radio One.
Wjhat if the TV is NEVER used for these purposes (albeit it maybe could?)
Sounds dodgy...

would PRS cover sports matches?
If the TV was only ever used to show rugby matches (for example) would there be a case to answer?
Or is it a case of if you own a set you are deemed to show everything that could be shown on it etc etc etc (not unreasonably maybe).
Anybody know?

Has any other club been persued by the Performing Rights Society for the payment of fees with regard to televisions being used on premises? We have now received two phone calls and a letter asking for our information and on giving honest answers have been told that they want £147.50 per set per year, backdated as far as we can remember having a tv set on the premises! It is apparently part of a nationwide crack down and all will be persued. Having expressed my disbelief and made the comments that it is neither legal nor fair to chase a fee retrospectively the matter has been referered to a higher authority. I will advise what happens.
Any news from any other Club that has been persued? I think that every rugby club house that I visit has at least one TV set and the charge is per set.
