We had a youth dutch touring side play against one of our youth teams. I think they were U16s or U17s.

The dutch team had a female scrumhalf who was very skillful. I think she was 17 or 18 and also played for their womens national side. She took and gave full contact.

That game was played here in this country, rightly or wrongly.

I do not know if there is a definitive answer. If you were playing in England then the regulations are clear (see below). However I can't find anything similar in the iRB regulations, so its basically up to the Irish RFU regulations - which don't seem to be available online.

"1.2 Compliance with iRB Laws and RFU Rules and Regulations

1.2.1 All matches played under the jurisdiction of the RFU and/or in RFU Competitions must be played in accordance with iRB Laws and Regulations, RFU Rules and Regulations (including Game Regulations 1-10), and any applicable Age Grade Variations. In addition, all matches played in RFU Competitions must be played in accordance Game Regulations 11-21.

1.2.2 The playing of Rugby Union Football between male and female teams containing male and female players is permissible only within the modified matches of the RFU Continuum and in all forms of non-contact, touch, or tag rugby."

As for insurance - as its an Irish tournament then you don't need special permission from the RFU to enter - but reading the RFU insurance documents only matches and tournaments sanctioned by the RFU are insured - and if women were playing then that is clearly contrary to the English RFU regulations and there is a chance they could refuse a claim on that basis.

If I were you I'd ask the tournament organisers and ask them to confirm that the tournament is sanctioned by Irish RFU then call the Tournaments & Competitions Department on 0870 143 2448 to double check if your players would be covered were they to play against a mixed side.

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask but hopefully someone will know the answer.

My club, Kings Cross Steelers are going over to Dublin in a couple weeks to play in the Bingham Cup tournament. One of the teams we have been drawn against is a 2nd XV from San Francisco who state that they have 3 women playing in their team.

I've argued that we cannot play a mixed team, but the tournament organisers say as long as the women are insured to play "rugby" as opposed to "women's rugby" it will be OK.

Does anyone know a definative answer?

Cheers
Sean
