Kersal’s Battle of Waterloo

There was to be no heroic win for Altrincham Kersal Women’s RFC as they battled against current table leaders of National Challenge North 1, Waterloo WRFC who fielded a number of international players.

Unlike last weeks boggy field at Carlisle, the mud-free pitch and sunny weather offered a better opportunity for a challenging win over the home side. A strong forwards’ squad offered a positive attack against Waterloo’s pack with good momentum and excellent phases of play entering the home side’s half in the early part of the match. This was however short lived as Waterloo settled into a series of back line attacks creating numerous overlaps that relentlessly tested Kersal’s defensive line.  A 7-0 score line after 15 minutes was increased to 25 – 0 by the 19th, but further points were restricted by a fantastic steal on the tri line by the Kersal captain Anna Goatman who mastered her debut as inside centre from her usual number eight position with great skill.  The half-time whistle saw Waterloo lead 38–0.

Cardus’ striking breaks through the opposition line and determined defensive efforts by Silver and Dutton were proof alone that the away side were undeterred in their efforts to stay in the game. Tenacious tackling was eventually over shadowed by the fluidity of live ball which saw Waterloo get through an exhausted Kersal defence and resulted in a final score of 84-0.
