Rugby Leaders Conference

With just 28 days to go, including the festive season, the final preparations are underway for RLC 2008 which takes place on 19/20 January 2008 at Staverton Park, Daventry. Our focus will be retention following our successful adult player recruitment campaign. Your nominated delegates have been contacted to register their full details including any special requirements.

To avoid disappointment they should respond promptly, if they have not already done so. Please would you be kind enough to support your volunteers so they are fully able to represent views from your CB. Delegate packs will be sent early in the New Year to avoid the Christmas post. The organising team are able to answer any questions about policy, content or logistics: Peter Grace, [ ], Peter Bath[] and Laura Fear [ ] respectively.

2008 Prohibited List

We would like to remind all Constituent Bodies that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2008 Prohibited List comes into effect on 1 January 2008. The 2008 List replaces the 2007 List and outlines the classes of substances and methods that are banned in sport, including rugby union.

The 2008 List is available for download together with a summary of the major changes on the Anti-doping page of the RFU website. It is particularly important to remember that:

  • (a) the RFU can test any player, anytime, anywhere.
  • (b) the principle of strict liability applies to all players, meaning they are solely responsible for any prohibited substance found in their body, irrespective of whether the player intentionally or unintentionally used the substance.
  • (c) Players should take extra care to re-check the status of any substances they may be taking; particularly medications and they can do this by logging on to the Drug Information Database at

For further information please contact RFU Anti-Doping Officer, Gavin Dovey via email on or telephone on 020 8831 7441.

Northumberland RFU were awarded the Roger Hopson Governing Body of Sport Award for the work they carry out developing community rugby. The presentation was made in November at the North East Sports Awards which are sponsored by Sport England, Sunderland City Council, One North East and the BBC.

We are not sure if this is a first for a CB but we congratulate Northumberland on their achievement given in recognition of the huge amount of work that is being delivered throughout the CB by volunteers and executive staff working together in partnership.
