Keep off the grass

Developing and maintaining well designed and constructed grass pitches for rugby union is a major objective of the RFU.

The demand and expectation for good quality grass pitches is ever growing and clubs are keenly aware of the importance of pitches in ensuring a strong and sustainable community game.

Through effective maintenance, improvement schemes or new installations, the RFU is committed to being the startpoint for the best advice on performance quality standards, construction, turf maintenance and much more.

Firstly, the RFU has produced a Natural Turf Pitches Guidance Document (PDF 970kB), providing information on how to develop your playing surface.

Also, Sport England has a useful three part guide on Natural Turf for Sport (PDF 1.2MB), which can be downloaded for reference.

Various bodies are also useful touch points for information, such as the Institute for Groundsmanship (IOG) and the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI).

Also for reference purposes, the International Rugby Board has information on how to comply with Pitch Size Regulations.

Groundsman Development

There are also opportunities for Groundsman Development, with training courses developed by the IOG for an introduction to basic rugby pitch renovation.
