Community award 2007/08
Stonehouse Sharks - Devonport HSOB RFC (Devon RFU)
Peter Robinson, U15s Lead Coach says: “I was motivated to draft this nomination by the simple fact that the volunteers at my club are to a person exceptional. I was involved some four years ago when a group of us decided to start a Youth set up, some thought we were mad, mainly because the area in which our club is based in is best described as a ‘regeneration area’ and is topographically financially destitute.
"Despite our initial reservations we forged ahead and on the way we picked up some fantastic volunteer coaches, who have given their time not only at the club but in the local community in general; we have coaches giving free sessions in the local schools and open days during the school holidays in which the whole community is welcome. My own personal experience has included some seriously financially poor young men; when we started this squad, we said it didn’t matter where you’re from and how much money you’re parents have got, everyone is treated equally and everyone gets to play the game. We now proudly have a group of young men who should go far in the game; we have built a team and hope that we have even made a difference in their lives.
"The Youth club today is going from strength to strength, we have sides ranging from U6 to Colts, all supported by fantastic coaches and volunteers. The local community has been enriched by the club’s presence and we hope that we have made a positive contribution to the local youths; allowing them to stay out of trouble and maybe provide new focus to them in the future.
"I made this nomination not because these volunteers give their individual time freely, and not because they go into the local community and recruit players to the game at their own expense – it’s because they do it with a smile and ask for nothing in return."
