Fundraising award 2007/08

Ilkley RFC (Yorkshire RFU)

Ilkley have produced a fantastic fundraising effort in pursuit of their vision for the 21st century; a new community clubroom, viewing area and changing facilities. Over £420,000 of the £800,000 target has already been donated and pledged. Money has come in from club members, corporate sponsorship and advertising revenue from the ‘development’ brochure.

Additional initiatives devised by club members - totals of which are not included in the £420,000 - involved donations in kind/products by club members (totaling over £30,000), the club Chairman raising over £8,000 cycling from Liverpool to Leeds along the canal (accompanied only by a retired second row forward who could mend punctures), Mini/Youths fundraising activities (including U7s selling approximately £2,000 of Whitakers’ over-run chocolates and their coach John Redding braving a New Year's Day sponsored plunge in White Wells) and the U16s taking £300 at their Xmas Fayre and collecting £633 in four hours bag-packing at Guiseley’s Marks & Spencer.

The Ilkley Rugby Club 2008 calendars have been sold mainly by the Minis/Youths with the value of calendars sold a magnificent £2,000. The U14s braved the White Wells plunge and raised nearly £1,500 whilst the U16s hosted a quiz evening at the club, raising nearly £1000. U11s activities included a "Boys Sporting Black Tie Dinner" held in February. The parents cooked the meal and served the lads and Leeds Carnegie player, Scott Armstrong, gave a motivational talk at the beginning of the evening. Sumptuous food was followed by entertainment, and the evening ended with a grand raffle, raising £1,000. The boys invited non-rugby players from school and a number enjoyed it so much they are going to start playing.

U17s friends and families helped at the Ilkley Beer Festival and raised £1,000 on the day. They also have a few more events planned. Future Minis/Youths fundraising activities include race nights, treasure hunts and a sponsored "passing" morning. The U10s/U12s coaches are organising a Club Ball and the Under 13s are hosting a disco to raise approx £1500. All the Mini/Youth sides are committed to raising a minimum of £2,000 per age group, whilst Marcus Mountcastle, 3XV skipper, is also showing the way by demanding a huge ransom for doing a parachute jump. The senior players also planned a ‘Sportspersons' Dinner and Auction’ fundraising event at the Craglands Hotel that included 450 guests and a host of big names, including a headline appearance from Martin Johnson, with the evening alone raising over £50,000 for the club.
