Technology award 2007/08
Oakmeadians RFC (Dorset & Wilts)
This season Oakmeadians decided to embrace technology and utilise it to benefit all sections of the club in all elements of the club’s operation. The project, led by one of the player/coaches, aimed to drag the club into the 21st Century and has provided the club with an excellent platform for the future. The first stage was to prepare a new, improved website, which contains the basics with photos of the teams, information for past/current members and potential visitors as well as news and “gossip”.
In addition the web has the facility for streaming video, enabling the display of highlights of games and other promotional material. The “info hub” is an area where club officers, team managers and coaches have email addresses and calendars for team use showing fixtures, meetings and social events. The application will be expanded to include an on line, members only “library” where club information and resources can be accessed remotely and registration information will be stored to create mailing lists, making the distribution of information and newsletters much simpler.
Technology is also being used in the clubhouse. Funds were raised recently to purchase an over head projector linked to the television and computers, enabling the club to show rugby matches - both premiership and international games. These have been very popular in the bar at weekends and after training but also as part of social evenings. For example a free buffet was provided for the World Cup final which saw the clubhouse packed with spectators.
In addition, the ability to link the projector to a computer has led to the creation of new social events on the Oakmeadians calendar; including quiz nights, family evenings and “adult nights”, which have been very successful in terms of fundraising and gathering those from various club sections in a relaxed atmosphere.
