The club has a Coaching Development Plan for all coaches and other volunteers which identifies their training needs; from TAG courses, coaching Level 1, 2 and 3, Equity Courses, Appointed Persons First Aid, Referee courses and Welfare. Coach 'only' training sessions are also held by the Coaching Coordinator.
Over 40 coaches have been recruited for the Mini-Youth section with an average of four coaches per squad (giving a coach to player ratio of 1:6). There is always a Head Coach and Assistant Coaches, plus a Team Manager, who all receive a full induction when they start from the Volunteer Coordinator.
Task Descriptions and Codes of Conduct are issued and attendance is encouraged at various courses. All coaches have to attend the Appointed Persons First Aid course; a certificated one day course with an emphasis on rugby related injuries. The course is very popular with 30 volunteers qualifying per annum. Every Head Coach has to achieve their coaching Level 1 and the club now has over 50% of its coaches qualified at Level 1, with six qualified at Level 2 and one at Level 3.
All qualified coaches receive a club 'Coach' drill top with their name on, which proves to be a good incentive and are invited to an Annual 'Port & Stilton' day in recognition of their work. Coaches are supported by the Coaching Coordinator and Welfare Officer and are encouraged to continually develop themselves professionally through attendance at a variety of RFU and More Than Sport courses which are advertised on the club training board and emailed to every coach.
By supporting coaches in all of these areas, the coaches are happy to get on and coach, and are keen to progress and qualify, knowing that they have the support and assistance of other members of the club in areas that they are less experienced in. Coaches are encouraged to work with other more experienced coaches in years directly above and below them to help improve their knowledge and skills and also work closely with the senior section who are included in the training plan. Every season, all coaches, parents and players are issued with satisfaction/feedback forms which allow them to voice any concerns and suggestions for improvements. The feedback helps to form part of the club’s development plan.
